Weed Prevention
Prevention is Better than Cure
Prevention is the foundation of an Integrated Weed Management Approach.
By adopting a proactive approach, you can significantly reduce weed growth. Utilizing mechanical solutions like sweepers and weed brushes helps minimise debris buildup, leading to fewer weeds and a healthier landscape. Prioritizing prevention not only saves time and resources but also enhances the overall effectiveness of your weed management efforts.
Detritus build up is one of the largest causes of weeds on hard surfaces. Sweeping this detritus is our first line of defence against weeds. Kersten sweepers have been specifically designed to remove soil and heavy debris on hard surfaces. This is achieved by several very important design features that are not typically found on other sweepers.
The brush – We use 5 spiral rows of bristles on our roller brush. The gaps between the rows provide space for movement of larger volumes of heavy debris. The spiral pattern allows pressure to be applied across a narrow section of the brush rather than the full width. Less power is required to move heavy material at this point, than across the whole brush at once, so the brush can tackle much heavier material than other brushes.
Height adjustment – The pressure of the brush can be finely adjusted on the rear castors, which prevents unnecessary brush wear and allows the brush to maximise performance on a range of surfaces. The two castors also allow the brush to follow contours closely to keep as much contact with the ground as possible.
Angling – The brushes can be angled to sweep forward, left or right. This allows material to be collected or wind-rowed.
Collector boxes – A height adjustable container can be fitted to the sweeper in order to collect material that has been swept. The box is sized so that it can be handled by one operator and is perfect for the collection of heavy debris such as soil, moss and sand.
Gully brush – A side brush can be fitted for presenting gullies. The brush pulls material out from the edges into the path of the main brush, so it can be collected. This really makes an impact on a site and draws the eye to the crisp clean edges.
Brush guard – A brush guard can be fitted to our sweepers instead of the collecting box. This prevents dust and debris being flicked into the air by the brush. Instead the material is contained close to the brush. This is extremely useful when trying to wind-row material.

Weed Prevention
Weed prevention is crucial for maintaining clean, safe, and visually appealing outdoor surfaces. By addressing the root causes of weed growth, you can significantly reduce the need for frequent interventions. The following tools and strategies help keep your surfaces free of weeds and detritus buildup:
Sweepers
Sweepers are ideal for removing loose debris, leaves, and dirt that accumulate on the surface and in gullies. A powered sweeper with a collector box is effective in preventing detritus buildup, which can obstruct drainage and lead to moss and weed growth. Sweepers are also excellent for cleaning edges and keeping pavements clear. For added versatility, our pedestrian sweepers come equipped with a de-moss brush, which effectively removes moss and algae that may have started to grow on the surface.
Weed Brushes
A weed brush is the best tool for tackling established weeds, moss, and compacted detritus buildup, especially for silding out kerb edges. It efficiently removes invasive plants and compacted debris that can cause surface cracks and deterioration over time. This tool is particularly effective in areas where weeds have penetrated tarmac or paving, preventing further damage by eliminating root systems. Regular use of a weed brush helps prevent freeze-thaw cycles from exacerbating cracks, ensuring your surfaces stay weed-free for much longer.
Strategies for Minimizing Soil and Detritus Build-Up
- Trim trees and hedges: Trees drop organic debris that decomposes into soil, promoting weed growth. Keeping tree canopies trimmed and removing dead branches reduces the volume of material dropped onto hard surfaces.
- Fill gaps in surfaces: Minimizing gaps reduces the traps for detritus and soil. This prevents deep pockets of soil where weeds can establish themselves, and also mitigates freeze-thaw effects.
- Sweep regularly: Once detritus sources and traps are minimized, regular sweeping is key. By removing organic material before it decomposes into soil, you make weed prevention much easier and less time-consuming.
- Remove existing soil: For areas with existing soil or compacted debris, use a weed brush to remove it efficiently. In some cases, a shovel, broom, or pressure washer may also be effective for clearing out soil buildup.
By integrating these tools and strategies, Kersten UK provides a comprehensive approach to weed prevention, helping you maintain clean, functional, and aesthetically pleasing outdoor spaces.
Articles about Outdoor Surface Maintenance
To control dust on asphalt surfaces, adjust your sweeper's brush speed to a slower setting to minimize dust dispersal. Spraying water directly onto the brush or the surface helps bind the dust, making it heavier and easier to collect. Kersten sweepers are available with dust suppression kits can efficiently handle dust without spreading it around.
A dust suppression kit sprays water directly onto the brush of a sweeper and surface. This technique helps bind dust particles, making them heavier and easier to collect. By reducing the amount of dust that becomes airborne, these kits help maintain cleaner surfaces and improve air quality.
For hard-to-reach areas, use a pedestrian two wheel tractor such as K-series or UBS-series with dust suppression kit. Adjust the brush speed to a slower setting and apply water to the brush to control dust effectively. A debris guard can also help manage dust in confined spaces.
The Gully Brush is a specialized attachment for sweepers, expertly designed to manage debris in challenging areas such as edges, gullies, and kerbsides. It efficiently pulls dirt, leaves, and other debris from these hard-to-reach spots into the path of the main sweeper brush. Once in the sweeper brush’s path, the debris is collected by the sweeper and deposited into the collector box, ensuring a comprehensive clean and a polished finish.
The frequency of replacement depends on the amount of usage and the type of debris you're dealing with. Regular inspection is recommended, and brushes should be replaced as soon as you notice signs of wear, such as reduced cleaning performance or uneven bristle wear.
When deciding between a sweeper and a weed brush for asphalt and tarmac maintenance, consider the specific issues you're facing:
- Sweeper: Ideal for removing loose debris, leaves, and dirt that accumulate on the surface and in gullies. A powered sweeper with a collector box is effective in preventing detritus buildup, which can obstruct drainage and lead to moss and weed growth. It is also useful for cleaning edges and keeping pavements clear. Our pedestrian sweepers also come with a de-moss brush, which helps remove moss and algae that may have started to grow on the surface.
- Weed Brush: Best for tackling established weeds and moss that have penetrated the surface. A weed brush can effectively remove these invasive plants, which can cause surface cracks and deterioration over time. It’s particularly useful in areas where weeds have started to penetrate the tarmac, causing damage.
Recommendation: For comprehensive maintenance, use a combination of both tools. Start with a weed brush to address any existing moss and weeds, then follow up with a sweeper to clear the surface and prevent further issues. This dual approach ensures both removal of vegetation and effective debris management, maintaining the integrity and appearance of your asphalt or tarmac surfaces.

Regularly removing soil and heavy debris is essential for effective grounds maintenance to ensure the longevity and safety of hard surfaces such as asphalt, tarmac, and block paving. Accumulated soil and debris can lead to several issues:
- Surface Degradation: Soil and debris, when left unmanaged, can contribute to surface damage. Organic material decomposes and forms a layer of detritus that can compromise the structural integrity of pavements and roads.
- Weed and Moss Growth: Moisture trapped by debris promotes the growth of weeds and moss. This not only deteriorates the surface but also creates hazards for pedestrians and vehicles. Regular removal prevents these issues from taking hold.
- Drainage Problems: Debris accumulation around drainage edges and kerb lines can block water flow, leading to flooding and further surface damage. Maintaining clear drainage areas is critical for preventing water-related problems.
- Enhanced Safety: Removing debris prevents slippery conditions, reducing the risk of accidents. It ensures that walkways and roadways remain safe for users, especially in high-traffic or frequently used areas.
- Cost Efficiency: Regular maintenance reduces the need for costly repairs by addressing issues before they escalate. It helps keep the surface in good condition, minimizing long-term expenses associated with extensive repairs or replacements.
For effective soil and debris management, tools like sweepers and weed brushes are invaluable. They help efficiently clear and maintain hard surfaces, ensuring a clean, safe, and durable environment.
A weed brush is crucial for effective soil and heavy debris management, particularly in areas where compacted debris and stubborn weeds accumulate. It excels at clearing paths and kerb edges, handling heavy-duty, compacted surfaces with ease. The brush's design allows it to target and remove debris in tight spots, such as along kerb lines and around drainage edges. By using a weed brush, you can ensure thorough cleaning and maintenance, preventing the buildup of soil and debris that could otherwise lead to surface damage and promote weed growth.
Weeds thrive on tarmac and asphalt surfaces when detritus, such as leaves and twigs, accumulates in gullies and along pavement edges. This buildup creates a medium for weeds to grow. Once weeds establish themselves in the debris, their roots can penetrate the surface, leading to cracks and further surface damage. Over time, the cracks widen, causing the surface to crumble and form potholes. Regular use of a gully brush and powered sweeper with a collector box is essential for clearing debris from edges and gullies, preventing detritus from rotting and providing a breeding ground for weeds. This helps maintain the integrity of the surface and prevents costly damage.
To prevent moss and algae growth, ensure regular sweeping to remove organic debris and detritus. Prune nearby trees and hedges to reduce leaf and twig accumulation. Maintain proper drainage by addressing any issues with sand displacement or compaction.
The frequency of using Kersten weed brushes varies based on the level of moss and weed growth. For high-traffic areas or surfaces with significant moss problems, regular use is essential to prevent buildup and maintain a clean surface. To avoid detritus accumulation and potential rot, it's crucial to implement preventative measures. Utilizing a powered sweeper and collector can effectively remove debris and support ongoing maintenance, ensuring optimal performance and longevity of your block paving.
Kersten weed brushes and powered sweepers are essential tools for maintaining block paving surfaces.
